Newborn Blog post

What is more precious than a squishy little sleeping newborn baby? Nothing! Newborns are our specialty at Baby Boo Photography.  I have been photographing newborns for more than 10 years and have taken numerous classes and hands on workshops to perfect my skills with photographing newborns so that the session flows smoothly.  Each setup in a newborn session is well planned and thought out. The questions that are asked during the consultation help me to choose colors that coordinate with baby’s room, fit the style of the parents and even include some props that the parents bring in.

Newborns are best photographed between 7 and 12 days old. While babies up to two weeks old can be photographed with some of our props they may not sleep as much nor will certain poses be attempted due to their size.  When you arrive in the studio and during your session will be warm-like 85 degrees warm.  This makes baby super sleepy and comfortable being nakey.  It is usually suggested that  a bottle of either breast (pumped) or formula be brought to the session. This will allow me to feed the baby without breaking stride and will also take less time. Mom can also just relax and chill in the background (something she may not get to do much anymore).  A pacifier is also a required item to bring to the session whether your baby takes one or not.  Often the pacey is used to calm a baby into a certain pose. If you forget yours do not worry- I keep sterilized brand new pacifiers at the studio for just that situation. Trust me, your baby will not leave the studio addicted to the pacifier!

If you are having family or parent images taken please be sure to bring a change of clothes since you may be pooped or peed on.  This also allows you to change into some comfy clothes.  I always photograph family and parent images with baby first since that allows you time to relax and big brother or sister time to play afterwards.  We usually suggest that parent dress in black if it is just the parents and white shirts if you are doing family with sibling.  You may opt to do white with just parents, but honestly black hides any baby accidents better.

When you are called for your consultation you will be asked if you have any props or any one setup you’ve seen  on our website or Facebook page that you might like. You do not have to choose one, but I do plan and have everything setup before you get there.  It actually blocks my creativity when someone comes in and starts asking to do this and this and this when I already have a flow and the session planned.

Not all babies will do all poses. The Froggy pose is a favorite, but not all babies tolerate it and if your baby is older than 12 days I will not even attempt it. Some babies don’t like being on their tummy’s and others love it. Each baby is unique and different and I will adapt my poses as the session goes.

Rest assured, even the fussiest baby will be photographed. I’ve never given up on a session-it may be a longer one, but I always win in the end.

Just a note on newborn sessions;  We a lot 2.5 hours for each newborn session. We only book newborn sessions Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 12:30. No newborn sessions are booked on Saturdays. It is recommended that you book your newborn session about 2-3 months from your due date to assure that we have the availability. Your newborn session will be booked about 7-10 days from your due date and can always be changed should you have the baby early or late. PLEASE let us know if your due date changes or you have your baby early!! This is so important so that we get them into the studio during that optimum timeframe .

Check out some of our favorite newborns and give us a call if you have any questions about our newborn sessions.
